ANYTHING GOES

JUN 15 - JUL 9, 2016

All aboard for this splendid and saucy musical comedy! Anything Goes is the winner of three 2011 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival and considered one of the greatest musicals of all time. When the S.S. American heads out to sea, etiquette and convention get tossed out the portholes as three unlikely pairs set off on the course to true love… proving that sometimes destiny needs a little help from a tap-dancing crew of singing sailors, an exotic disguise and some good old-fashioned blackmail. Topping off the fun is Cole Porter’s delightful, delicious, “De-Lovely” first-class score that includes some of musical theatre’s most memorable standards, including “I Get A Kick Out Of You,” “You’re The Top,” and of course, “Anything Goes.” Don’t let this fun and funny show set sail without you!

  • In the wake of a boom in the international cruise ship industry following the 1929 stock market crash, producer Vinton Freedley had an idea for a new musical comedy about a shipwrecked ocean liner. But when real-life tragedy occurred on the open seas, future dream-team Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse were brought in to revise Guy Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse’s original book. In frustrated response to the pace at which the musical was coming together, one producer exclaimed, “from now on with this show, anything goes.” The line stuck and the show went on to become a smash hit.

Anything Goes opened on Broadway at the Alvin Theatre on November 21, 1934, running for 420 performances during the yearlong run. A few years earlier, Freedley had seen burgeoning starlet Ethel Merman performing in a nightclub and asked her to audition for George and Ira Gershwin’s new musical Girl Crazy. Upon hearing her sing “I’ve Got Rhythm,” Merman was immediately cast as Kate and made her stage debut in late 1930 alongside Ginger Rogers. She went on to appear in other stage productions and musical films before returning to Broadway in the original production of Anything Goes as Reno Sweeney, the first of five Cole Porter musicals in which she would star. Joining Merman in the original cast was William Gaxton as young Wall Street broker Billy Crocker and Victor Moore as gangster Moonface Martin. Merman reprised her role in the 1936 movie musical opposite Bing Crosby as Billy Crocker (Crosby would go on to appear in another film of the same name twenty years later with Donald O’Connor and Mitzi Gaynor, although this version bears little resemblance to the original stage version).

Another star of the show was Cole Porter’s first-class score. The only child of a wealthy family, Porter bucked family expectations and pursued a career in music from an early age. After his first attempt on Broadway failed, Porter moved to Paris in 1917 where he married widowed socialite Linda Lee Thomas and traveled Europe while continuing to write songs. He found the success he was looking for over a decade later with his first hit song “Let’s Do It (Let’s Fall In Love)” from Paris, which launched his legacy as one of Broadway’s most prolific composers and songwriters. Porter would eventually write over 800 songs (300 of which were written while pursuing his undergraduate degree at Yale, including the university’s fight song, “Bulldog") before his death in 1964.

Aside from the title song, Anything Goes features some of Porter’s most famous songs written in his signature playful wit, including “You’re the Top,” “I Get a Kick Out of You,” and “It’s De-Lovely,” with the latter first appearing in an Off-Broadway 1962 revival. The book for the revival incorporated many plot changes from the film versions as well as some changes to the song list. The show returned to Broadway in 1987 and again in 2011 with Sutton Foster (sister of Ogunquit’s Million Dollar Quartet director Hunter Foster) as Reno Sweeney. The production won three Tony Awards, including Best Revival, Best Choreography and Best Actress, and five Drama Desk Awards, and went on to tour the U.S. in late 2012 with Rachel York (Ogunquit’s Spamalot) in the leading role with Edward Staudenmayer (Ogunquit’s 9 to 5 The Musical, also starring Sally Struthers) also in the cast. This year marks the second time Anything Goes has been performed on the Ogunquit Playhouse stage, with the only other production staged in 1989. This splendid and saucy musical comedy features Broadway sets and costumes and top-notch talent in Broadway’s original "Annie" Andrea McArdle as Reno and Emmy Award winner Sally Struthers as Evangeline Harcourt.

In addition to her extraordinary talents, Ms. Struthers brings something else to this production: Little Bradford T. Kenney, a devoted but wandering Cairn Terrier who plays canine companion Cheeky to Struthers’ Harcourt. Sally rescued Little Brad two years ago with help from Ogunquit Playhouse Executive Artistic Director and namesake Bradford Kenney. Along with Mr. Kenney’s own two dogs Wesley, a Scottish Terrier, and Shannie, a West Highland White Terrier, Little Brad was adopted from the Northern New England Westie Rescue, a licensed shelter devoted to rescuing Westies, Cairns and Scotties from puppy mills, owner surrenders and kill shelters. Many of the dogs taken in by the all-volunteer organization come from the mid-West. Each dog is rehabilitated at foster homes before being transported to New England to their new forever homes. A friendly pup with big dreams, Little Brad is a natural on stage. “He certainly had his own ideas for his scenes,” director Jayme McDaniel said of Little Brad.

  • ANDREA McARDLE (Reno Sweeney) first captured the hearts of theatergoers everywhere in 1977 when she originated the title role in the mega-musical Annie, based on the popular Harold Gray comic strip “Little Orphan Annie.” Since then, she has starred in several Broadway musicals and appeared in theatres in New York, nationally and internationally. She has performed in concert halls from Carnegie Hall to the Hong Kong Philharmonic and casino hotels in both Las Vegas and Atlantic City. She has honed her craft by working with some of the great legends of the entertainment industry such as Ethel Merman, Liza Minnelli, Julie Andrews, Bob Hope, Liberace, Frank Sinatra, Steve Martin and Martin Short, to name a few, and was privileged to have appeared on television with Johnny Carson, Merv Griffin and Dinah Shore. As “Annie,” Andrea became the youngest performer ever to be nominated for a Tony Award as Best Lead Actress in a Musical. She also received the Theater World and Outer Critics' Circle Awards for her performance and went on to star when the show was produced on London’s West End. (Fun fact: Catherine Zeta-Jones played young orphan Mollie in this production). Coming full circle, Andrea was tapped by Academy Award nominated director Rob Marshall to appear as “The Star to Be” in the Disney/ABC television production of Annie starring Kathy Bates and Victor Garber. And in the summer of 2010, Andrea played, yes, Miss Hannigan in a production at the North Carolina Theatre and at Musical Theatre West in California. Also on Broadway, Andrea starred in the Jerry Herman musical Jerry’s Girls alongside Carol Channing and Leslie Uggams, as sassy Smoking Car Ashley in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Starlight Express, as Margy Frake in State Fair, as Fantine in Les Miserables, and most recently, as Belle in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. She toured nationally starring as Sally Bowles in Cabaret and as Eponine in Les Miserables, and appeared as herself in The Vagina Monologues, which she appeared in Off-Broadway as well. Andrea appeared Off-Broadway in the satirical Newsical and regionally as the title role in Mame and Hello, Dolly! Andrea continues to tour around the country in the concert event 4 Girls 4 with Maureen McGovern, Donna McKechnie and Faith Prince. Other theatre appearances include starring as Esther, the Judy Garland role, in Meet Me in St. Louis; Mrs. Johnstone in Blood Brothers; Penelope Pennywise in Urinetown; Sonia in They’re Playing Our Song; Luisa in The Fantasticks; Eva Peron in Evita; Nancy in Oliver!; the Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat; Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun; Sandy in Grease; and as Mama Rose in Gypsy. In addition to Annie, Andrea’s film and television credits include starring as Judy Garland in Rainbow, appearing in “The Leading Ladies of Broadway” on PBS, “All My Children” on ABC and headlining her own PBS special “Andrea McArdle on Broadway.”

SALLY STRUTHERS (Evangeline Harcourt) is a two-time Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award winner for her performance in the ground-breaking TV series “All in the Family.” She starred in the Fox television series “9 to 5” and her own CBS series “Gloria.” She also recurred on the CBS comedy “Still Standing” and the CW network’s highly acclaimed “Gilmore Girls.” She joined the Gilmore cast for Netflix’s new four movie limited revival, which will premiere in the fall of 2016. She recently guest starred in the acclaimed IFC comedy series “Maron.” Sally was heard as the voice of the teenage dinosaur Charlene Sinclair in the ABC prime-time series “Dinosaurs.” She is also the voice of Pebbles Flintstone on the “Pebbles and Bam-Bam” cartoon series and the lead female character on the popular Disney cartoon “Tailspin.” Ms. Struthers’ television movies include: A Gun in the House, And Your Name is Jonah, The Great Houdinis, Hey… I’m Alive, In The Best Interest of the Children, Deadly Silence, My Husband is Missing, and Intimate Strangers. Sally co-starred in two legendary motion pictures in the 70’s: Five Easy Pieces with Jack Nicholson and The Getaway with Steve McQueen and Ali McGraw. She was also featured in four independent films: Out of the Black, A Month of Sundays with Rod Steiger, Waiting in the Wings and its sequel Waiting in the Wings: Still Waiting. She made a cameo appearance for actor/writer/producer Mario Van Peebles in the Sony feature Baadassss! Sally’s first two Broadway forays were in Wally’s Café with Rita Moreno and Jimmy Coco and Neil Simon’s female version of The Odd Couple with Brenda Vaccaro. For three years she starred as Miss Mamie Lynch on Broadway and on tour in the Tommy Tune production of Grease. In the 20th Anniversary Nat’l Tour of Annie Sally played the coveted role of Miss Hannigan. Sally was named Best Actress by the Los Angeles Artistic Director Theatre Awards for her role as Louise Seger in the musical Always, Patsy Cline, a true story based on the relationship between Seger and Cline. She won the Ovation Award as Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance as Agnes Gooch in the Los Angeles production of Mame, and won a second Ovation Award for Cinderella. She also won a plaque for Best Actress in her 7th grade class play. Additional starring theatre roles include regional productions of Hello, Dolly!, Anything Goes, The Fifth of July, Cat On a Hot Tin Roof, The Full Monty, Fiddler on the Roof, Chicago, All Shook Up, Drowsy Chaperone, Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, 9 to 5, Legally Blonde, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Witches of Eastwick and Nice Work if You Can Get It. For thirty years, Sally Struthers has worked tirelessly to help the hungry and uneducated children everywhere. She has visited these children in many Third World countries, and has filmed numerous public service announcements and documentaries on their behalf.
