The Summer of Love – 1967 – was the peak of the Haight-Asbury experience – when over 100,000 youth descended upon this San Francisco neighborhood to spread the message of love, peace and brotherhood in a time of great turmoil and frustration over the Vietnam War and the established culture of the day. This counterculture movement gave the world flower power, free love and open lifestyles. In the midst of the Vietnam War many believed that a new outlook was necessary; one that involved love and happiness, not guns and violence. The hippie movement was a phenomenon that swept the nation and included psychedelic drug use, heavy rock music, anti-establishment ideals, sexual freedom and the rejection of American commercialism and materialism.

The mainstream media's coverage of hippie life in the Haight-Ashbury drew the attention of youth from all over America, as the activities in the area were reported almost daily in city newspapers across the nation. The July 7, 1967, Time Magazine cover story on "The Hippies: Philosophy of a Subculture" and an August CBS News television report on "The Hippie Temptation,” added to the enormous national attention and helped to fuel the counterculture movement across the country and around the world.

As the neighborhood's fame reached its peak, it became the haven for a number of psychedelic rock performers and groups starting out at the time including Jefferson Airplane and Janis Joplin, who lived in the neighborhood. These local bands and performers immortalized the scene in song and lived within the community as friends and family. During the "Summer of Love," psychedelic rock music was entering the mainstream, receiving more and more commercial radio airplay. The Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967 was another catalyst for the hippie movement. It attracted 60,000 people and the national media, bringing heightened attention to the local Haight bands, shooting them to stardom. The song “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)” by the Mamas and the Papas was designed to promote the festival and became a top hit single that summer.

This time of riotous politics, creative expression and amazing music is the subject of Roger Bean’s latest musical, Summer of Love. He grew up listening to his mother sing Mama Cass songs around the house and was familiar with the music of the era, but not where the music was coming from and what it was dealing with at the time. He decided to write a musical about the issues and motivations behind the music of the 60s and the people who came from conservative backgrounds and flocked to San Francisco to discover a new way of living.

Summer of Love had its world premiere on the west coast at the Long Beach regional theatre, Musical Theatre West in April 2011. The Ogunquit Playhouse is proud to present the east coast premiere, with a stellar cast including the beautiful and talented Michele Lee and a top notch design team. Choreographer Lee Martino just wrapped up the west coast premiere of Summer of Love and just won her fourth Los Angeles Ovation Award for Carousel; Set Designer, Michael Carnahan whose works include both the west coast premiere and the Ogunquit Playhouse production of Summer of Love, just received a Tony Award nomination for Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson as part of the production design team and is currently represented on Broadway in The Importance of Being Ernest; Costume Designer, Bobby Pearce has created the costumes for the Ogunquit production of Summer of Love, and was nominated for a Tony Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award for Broadway’s Taboo - his celebrity client list is a who’s who of Broadway divas, including: Bebe Neuwirth, Faith Prince, Madeline Kahn, Elizabeth Ashley, Cyd Charisse, Glenn Close, Leslie Uggams and Gwen Verdon. Also joining the creative team is Jeffrey Cady, production designer of SenovvA, the multi-media company for the Broadway production of American Idiot and the Academy Awards.

Summer of Love is still a work in progress! In this second incarnation of the show, as an audience member, you are part of a process that may see this musical make its way to New York, just as Roger Bean’s hit show, The Marvelous Wonderettes. Summer of Love features ten hippies who are part of a Haight-Ashbury “tribe,” a runaway bride and her jilted groom. Through the eyes of these hippies, the runaway bride discovers what she is running from and what she is looking for - she finds it in the music and with the hippies of Haight-Ashbury, like so many did in 1967.

MICHELE LEE (Mama) starred on Broadway, in feature and television films, recorded and performed with legends of the entertainment industry. She is known worldwide for her Emmy-nominated role as Karen Mackenzie in the landmark CBS drama Knots Landing, the fifth longest running series in American television history. She was discovered at the age of 17 by Broadway producer David Merrick, and achieved national recognition as Rosemary in How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, which she later repeated on screen. In 1970 she played opposite Dean Jones and Buddy Hackett in Disney’s classic The Love Bug Ms Lee has starred in and produced numerous films for television including CBS’s Emmy-nominated Big Dreams and Broken Hearts: The Dottie West Story. In 1996 Michele became the first woman to produce, direct, write, and star in an Event Presentation movie with Color Me Perfect for the Lifetime Television Network. She was last seen in Universal Studio’s Along Came Polly opposite Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston. As a musical performer Stephen Holden of The New York Times says it best, “Once she’s on the stage, it isn’t enough to seduce or enlighten; the only goal worth pursuing is total conquest.” Additionally, Ms Lee won Tony nominations for her performances in the Broadway musical Seesaw and The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife. Ms Lee has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

DOUG CARPENTER (Curtis) began his career in opera earning a degree in voice from UNLV and a Masters in Vocal Performance from UCLA Since graduating, Doug originated in two Roger Bean shows with the role of Skip in Life Could Be A Dream (LA Weekly and LADCC Winner), and Curtis in Summer of Love. Regional Credits: Lancelot in Camelot (Pasadena Playhouse), Curly in Oklahoma (FCLO), Tony in West Side Story (FCLO), Thief in See What I Wanna See (Blank Theatre), Prince in Cinderella (CLOSBC), and Miss Saigon (Moonlight Amphitheatre). He also continues to teach vocal technique privately.

MISSY DOWSE (Holly) is thrilled to be making her Ogunquit debut with Summer of Love and is grateful to the creative team for this opportunity! National Tour: Gypsy (Louise). Most recently Bradley was seen on the Seacoast as the Wolfman in the world premiere of the Gay Bride of Frankenstein and as Old Joe in A Christmas Carol at the Seacoast Rep. ROGER BEAN (Writer and Director) created and directed the long-running off-Broadway hit The Marvelous Wonderettes, as well as the holiday sequel Winter Wonderettes. Other musicals created by Mr. Bean include the cross-dressing ‘40s musical The Andrews Brothers (over 50 productions throughout the country) and Route 66 (over 100 productions throughout the country, including two national tours). Mr. Bean also created the long-running Los Angeles hit Life Could Be A Dream, which received the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award, the LA Weekly Theatre Award, and the Backstage Garland Award for Best/Outstanding Musical of 2010. EMILIA MARTIN (Hair & Makeup Designer) is happy to be returning to the Ogunquit Playhouse for her 5th season. Previous designs include Sunset Boulevard, Chicago, My Fair Lady and The Producers. Recent New York credits include, Broadway: Jerusalem, La Bete, God of Carnage, Off-BWay: 2nd Stages Vera Stark, Vanities, and The Spoon River Project with 22Q Productions. While not running show Emilia is adjunct faculty for Wagner College, and this past spring at the Juilliard School. She is also a proud member of IATSE 798 as a Hair stylist. GEOF DOLAN (Technical Director) returns for his fifth season supervising the wonderful sets that grace the Ogunquit Playhouse stage In addition to his management skills, Geof brings a hands-on knowledge of the workings of stage scenery and mechanics, carpentry, and welding, and is now taking on some design and re-design credits, most particularly with last season’s Chicago Geof also serves as the Technical Supervisor for our Children’s Theatre shows For the past four winters he has been the Assistant Technical Director at the Orlando Shakespeare Theatre in FloridaHaving grown up in a theatrical family (his mother a Theater educator, his father a professional actor/director) he continues the tradition here: His wife, Cheryl, is the Charge Scenic Artist and his daughter Ashlynn is an active participant in the Children’s Theatre

Be prepared for a head on collision between cultures when a conservative bride runs away from the altar and runs into a VW Bus full of hippies from Haight-Ashbury, in the East Coast premiere of Summer of Love, on stage June 22 to July 16 at the Ogunquit Playhouse. The Ogunquit Playhouse season continues when the Broadway classic, The Music Man marches into town July 20 to August 20; the all singing, all dancing, feel-good musical comedy Legally Blonde the Musical, is on stage August 24 through September 17 with our heroine Elle, her Chihuahua, Bruiser and the bull-dog-toting-hairdresser Paulette, played by none other than Emmy-Award-winning, Playhouse favorite Sally Struthers; then the fall ushers in one of the most stunning Broadway blockbusters of all time, Miss Saigon, an epic love story that will touch your heart and haunt your memory, on stage September 21 through October 23.

Flowers were work in the hair at the east coast premier of Summer of Love, a groovy new musical by Roger Bean, the creator of The Marvelous Wonderettes and The Andrews Brothers, with choreography by Lee Martino. When a runaway bride discovers the counter-cultural revolution of the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco, with a little help from the hippies and dropouts of Golden Gate Park, she comes to realize she has to make her own kind of music! This hippie, trippy musical featured the powerful music of the late 1960s, by some of the most influential artists of the love generation: The Mamas and the Papas, Donovan, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane and many more. With such hits as "Crystal Blue Persuasion," "Make Your Own Kind of Music," "San Francisco" and so many more! A flower-power, feel-good musical experience! A wild trip!
