This brand-new musical production is an epic and emotionally charged retelling of the famous Victor Hugo love story of the beautiful gypsy girl Esmeralda, the scorned bell-ringer Quasimodo and the dashing Captain Phoebus, set in 15th century Paris. For the first time two masters of stage and screen, composer Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, Aladdin) and lyricist Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell, Pippin) join forces to adapt this time-honored story for the musical stage. The music's orchestral power and choral beauty, along with bold and dramatic theatrics create a powerful rendition of this timeless tale.

Hunchback Rings True
Prominent French Romantic poet, artist, novelist and dramatist Victor Marie Hugo lived in a turbulent era of political unrest. While best known for swelling prose and elaborate sagas, Hugo also led a life of political activism, advocating for the abolition of capital punishment, along with several other noble endeavors during the nineteenth century in his homeland of France. In an attempt to bolster reverence for and to protect the crumbling semblances of the great French Gothic architecture, Hugo began work on a novel that he hoped would spread this veneration for the past amongst his contemporaries. A powerful tale of tragically scorned bell-ringer Quasimodo and his love for fiery gypsy dancer Esmeralda soon evolved into a larger epic of more elaborately tangled nuances than Hugo had anticipated, and the piece took longer than expected to complete. The result was a seamless narrative of dark, embroiled conflict set in fifteenth century Paris within the looming parapets and intricate buttresses of one of France’s most impressive cathedrals, Notre Dame.
Notre-Dame de Paris, published in 1831 and translated to English in 1933 as The Hunchback of Notre Dame, ultimately accomplished what Hugo hoped it would. The popularity of the novel incited a historical preservation movement in France, eventually leading to major renovations at the Cathedral, many of which are hallmarks of its present-day appearance. After Notre-Dame was finished, Hugo began work on a new novel that he hoped would shine a light on the widespread social injustice felt in the wake of the French Revolution. Taking years to finish and largely written while in exile after speaking out against the government, Les Misérables would arguably become one of Hugo’s most famous works and be adapted into one of the most loved stage musicals of all time. With a similar tone and style, Notre-Dame, too, inspired numerous adaptations, evolving into incarnations for radio, film, television, ballet, opera, and theatre.
A recent retelling is Disney’s heartwarming animated classic released in 1996. The film brought together musical powerhouses Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, Aladdin) and Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell, Pippin) who collaborated to construct a beautifully elaborate score for the epic story. The film’s writer James Lapine made some changes to the story and a few years later Disney took to the stages of Germany with Der Glöckner Von Notre Dame, the company’s first international stage musical premiere which also became one of Berlin’s longest-running musicals of all-time.
The undeniable success of the German stage production added to the already growing desire for an English language version of Disney’s production in the United States. While a translated version of the German production was staged by The King’s Academy in West Palm Beach, Florida, in early 2013, the North American premiere of The Hunchback of Notre Dame with a new book by Peter Parnell opened in late 2014 at San Diego’s La Jolla Playhouse. Though many adaptations displayed varying degrees of faithfulness to Hugo’s original text, Parnell’s book was more closely reflective of the novel. The production also featured ten new songs from Menken and Schwartz to accompany the already well-loved Disney score. The production transferred to New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse the following year for a limited run that spring, receiving critical acclaim at both theatres. A cast recording was released in January 2016 under the direction of Brent-Alan Huffman, who will also serve as music director for the Ogunquit production.
The Ogunquit Playhouse is proud to be the New England premiere and one of the first regional theatres in the United States to produce The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Led by returning Broadway director Shaun Kerrison (Ogunquit’s Mary Poppins, Les Misérables, My Fair Lady, South Pacific), the production’s dramatic theatrics are intensified by a 32-voice choir to create a powerful rendition of this timeless tale. In honor of Victor Hugo’s reverence of Gothic grandeur, the magnificent set, designed by returning scenic designer Adam Koch (Ogunquit’s Sister Act, Saturday Night Fever), stretches out past the proscenium and transports the audience inside the walls of the famed Paris cathedral.

STEPHEN SCHWARTZ (Lyrics) is currently represented on Broadway by the music and lyrics for Wicked. He has also contributed music and/or lyrics to Godspell, Pippin, The Magic Show, The Baker’s Wife, Working (which he also adapted and directed), Rags, and Children of Eden. In addition to the Disney animated feature The Hunchback of Notre Dame, he collaborated with composer Alan Menken on the songs for Disney's Pocahontas and Enchanted. For children, he has written songs for two musicals, Captain Louie and Disney's My Son Pinocchio. Other credits include the songs for the DreamWorks animated feature The Prince of Egypt, collaborating with Leonard Bernstein on the English texts for Bernstein’s Mass, and the title song for the play and movie Butterflies are Free. His first opera, Seance on a Wet Afternoon, was produced at Opera Santa Barbara and New York City Opera. A book about his career, Defying Gravity, has recently been released by Applause Books. Mr. Schwartz has been inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. PETER PARNELL (Book) most recently wrote the new book for the Broadway revival of Lerner and Lane’s On A Clear Day You Can See Forever, starring Harry Connick Jr. and Jessie Mueller. His plays include Trumpery (Atlantic Theatre Company), QED starring Alan Alda (Mark Taper Forum, Vivian Beaumont, LCT), and a two-part stage adaptation of John Irving’s The Cider House Rules (Seattle Rep, Taper, Atlantic, American Theatre Critics Association Award). His other plays, Sorrows of Stephen, The Rise and Rise of Daniel Rocket, Romance Language, Hyde in Hollywood, Flaubert’s Latest, and An Imaginary Life, were first produced by the Public Theater and at Playwrights Horizons. For television, Parnell was a co-producer for “The West Wing” (two Emmy Award citations), and a producer for “The Guardian,” “Inconceivable,” and “Six Degrees.” His children’s book And Tango Makes Three, co-authored with Justin Richardson, was an American Library Association Notable Book, a Henry Bergh Award winner, and has either headed or been on the ALA’S Top Ten List of Most Banned Books from 2006-2012. Parnell has served on the Literary Award Committee of PEN, and has taught writing at Dartmouth, the New School, Columbia, the Yale School of Drama, and currently at NYU. SHAUN KERRISON (Director) Shaun most recently directed The Gershwin’s Of Thee I Sing at the Royal Festival Hall in London; Kiss Me Kate for BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall (broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and televised on BBC2); and new productions of Mary Poppins and The Witches of Eastwick, both at the Ogunquit Playhouse. Also at OP he directed South Pacific (BroadwayWorld, IRNE Award noms, Best Director), U.S. regional premiere of Sunset Boulevard starring Stefanie Powers (BroadwayWorld, IRNE Award noms, Best Director), Les Miserables and My Fair Lady (IRNE Award nom, Best Director). Shaun directed the European premiere of Bonnie and Clyde with Olivier Award-winning choreographer Bill Deamer; the Scandinavian premiere of Shrek the Musical in Sweden; and Grimm a new musical from Berlin. CONNOR GALLAGHER (Choreographer) is happy to be making his Ogunquit Playhouse debut. Connor recently received an Astaire Award for his work on The Robber Bridegroom (Roundabout, Dir. Alex Timbers). Selected work includes the world-premiere stage adaptation of Tangled (Disney, dir. Gordon Greenberg), Robert Schenkkan and Neil Berg's The Twelve (Denver Center), ...Spelling Bee (Bucks County), The Fabulous Lipitones (Goodspeed), Bunnicula (DR2), Fat Camp (NYMF, Best Choreography Award), Spidermusical (The Mint), Perez Hilton (Barrow Street), Lincoln Center, The York, Northern Stage, The Lortel, and numerous event for Broadway Cares. WENDELL SCOTT PURRINGTON (Chorus Master) has been busy following his retirement as Music Department Chair for the Portsmouth Schools where he conducted the high school and middle school choirs and served as musical director for dozens of musicals. He earned a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from New England Conservatory, conducted many festival choirs throughout New England, and was musical director for six productions at Prescott Park Arts Festival. He co-directs the Fourth Street Jazz Choir in Dover and is the Director of Music Ministries at York First Parish Church. This year is the twenty-third year of Wendell’s leadership as conductor of Seacoast Community Chorus. He has led the chorus on four concert tours to Europe, and looks forward to SCC’s trip to Scandinavia next summer. Wendell is thrilled to be a part of this remarkable production of Hunchback! “Love always wins.”

BRIAN J. SWASEY (Associate Producer) is originally from South Portland, ME, and is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire. After moving to NYC in 1995 and focusing on pursuing a career as an actor, he changed focus and became the Founding Artistic Director of The Astoria Performing Arts Center, followed by the Associate Producer position at Queens Theatre in the Park in Flushing, NY. There he was involved in producing the 20th Anniversary Revival of Closer Than Ever starring Sally Mayes and Lynne Winterstellar. Prior to coming to Ogunquit, he was the Managing Director for The New York Theatre Barn. NYC developmental projects have included: the rock musical The 12 and a new holiday musical entitled Tim and Scrooge. As a Director/Choreographer, Brian has had the pleasure of directing such shows as Pump Boys and Dinettes, Hairspray, Chicago, A New Brain, and Altar Boyz. He was the Assistant Director for the NYC Revival of Die, Mommie, Die! starring Charles Busch. At The Playhouse, Brian directed the TYA productions of The Berenstain Bears and The Cat In The Hat. In addition, Brian has been involved with booking cabaret entertainment at The Triad in NYC, as well as bringing such artists as Christina Bianco and Bruce Vilanch to MaineStreet in

TIMOTHEY SULLIVAN (Production Manager) 2016 marks Tim’s third season with the Ogunquit Playhouse. Prior to joining the OP team, he worked for several years as a producer for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, producing Broadway staples such as Broadway Backwards and Broadway Bares. Previous to his time at BC/EFA, Tim was the Production Director for the Tony Award-winning Intiman Theatre in Seattle. He has also served as Production Manager for the Brown University/Trinity Rep MFA Program as well as the Drama Desk Award-winning Mint Theater. He has worked on production teams for several Broadway shows and national tours, as well as the American Repertory Theatre, Trinity Rep, The Public, Lucille Lortel and New World Stages. He is also the Associate Director and Production Stage Manager for Charles Busch’s annual Off-Broadway production of Times Square Angel. As an Educator, Tim has taught at Bridgewater State University, Brown University and Harvard University’s Institute for Advanced Theatre Training, as well as teaching courses and seminars at various high schools and colleges throughout the United States.
GEOF DOLAN (Technical Director) is excited to be returning for his tenth season as the Ogunquit Playhouse's Technical Director and Scenic Coordinator. Immediately prior to Ogunquit he served as Technical Director for Worcester Foothills Theatre. He has done supplemental design work for several shows and received a 2014 BroadwayWorld Award for Best Scenic Design in Maine for his work on Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Robert Kovach original design). He is also the Technical Supervisor for the Children's Theatre program. Geof began his technical career working backstage for both of his parents who are theatre directors and began his professional career at Sierra Repertory Theatre in California. For five years he split his seasons between Maine and Florida, working the same technical areas for the Orlando Shakespeare, but now stays with the Playhouse year-round. His wife Cheryl (Scenic Charge Artist at the Playhouse for nine seasons) has designed award-winning parade floats and designs many of the Children’s Theater shows. His "born-in-a trunk" 15 year old daughter Ashlynn is an aspiring actress, musician and artist who can definitely call the Playhouse her second home.
CHERYL DOLAN (Resident Scenic Charge) is excited to be returning to the Ogunquit Playhouse for her ninth season. After taking over as Resident Scenic Charge seven years ago, she has designed several Children's Theatre sets, as well as added her artistic eye to many of the main stage productions. In the off-season, Cheryl is a Scenic Charge and Prop Master for The Good Theater in Portland, Maine. Since falling in love with the Ogunquit Playhouse, Cheryl, her husband Geof Dolan (the Ogunquit Playhouse Technical Director) and their daughter Ashlynn, who is a budding writer, have made the Seacoast their home year-round. Cheryl considers the staff at OP her family and hopes that her love and passion for theater is translated through the productions to all
of you.
BRADFORD T. KENNEY (Executive Artistic Director) is an artistic director, producer, stage and film director, and artist. Since joining the Ogunquit Playhouse in 2005, the Playhouse has tripled its audience growing from a single season summer stock theatre into one of the Northeast’s pre-eminent regional theatres with a three-season performance schedule. During his stewardship, the Playhouse has garnered a number of awards and honors including the Moss Hart Trophy, Regional Theatre Award for Outstanding Achievement in the American Theatre from the New England Theatre Conference, multiple IRNE Awards and a number of BroadwayWorld Awards including Best Musical and others. Mr. Kenney is also noted for his work at Carnegie Hall including directing the holiday special The Christmas Rose starring Jane Seymour and producing An American Christmas Carol with Tim Janis. Mr. Kenney’s film work includes the upcoming movie musical Buttons starring Dick Van Dyke, Jane Seymour, and Charles Shaughnessy. In New England, Mr. Kenney has been proud to be associated with a number of different theatre companies. Ogunquit, ME—The Ogunquit Playhouse is proud to be the New England premiere of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, on stage from July 13 to August 6, making the Playhouse one of the first regional theatres in the U.S. to stage this new musical. Victor Hugo’s epic tale of hope, love and passion, with book by Peter Parnell (On A Clear Day You Can See Forever Broadway revival) and music by composer Alan Menken (Newsies) and lyricist Stephen Schwartz (Wicked), soars to life in this emotionally charged retelling of the celebrated classic. The love story of the beautiful gypsy girl Esmeralda, the scorned bell-ringer Quasimodo and the dashing Captain Phoebus comes to glorious life in this powerful rendition of the timeless tale. The bold and dramatic theatrics, combined with the music's orchestral power and choral beauty provided by a thirty-two member choir that accompanies the cast, promise to transport audiences back to fifteenth century Paris and inside the cathedral walls made famous by Victor Hugo’s novel.
The stellar cast is led by F. Michael Haynie who is making his Ogunquit debut as Quasimodo. On Broadway he performed in Wicked and Holler If Ya Hear Me, on television in Peter Pan Live for NBC, and the film Not Fade Away for Paramount. The beautiful gypsy girl Esmeralda is played by Sydney Morton who has performed as part of the original Broadway casts of Memphis, Evita, Motown and American Psycho, the National Tours of Flashdance and Jersey Boys, and appeared in The Sound of Music Live broadcast on NBC. Christopher Johnstone returns to the Playhouse as Captain Phoebus after playing Lt. Cable in the award-winning production of South Pacific (Best Actor nominee Broadway World). His many theatre credits include the National Tours of the recent revival of Evita, Lincoln Center’s production of South Pacific and regional productions of Fiddler on the Roof, A Little Night Music, and Pirates of Penzance, among many others. Bradley Dean joins the cast as Claude Frollo. Mr. Dean is also making his Ogunquit debut and has appeared on Broadway in A Little Night Music, The Last Ship, Company, Doctor Zhivago, Spamalot, The Story of My Life, Evita, Jane Eyre, Man of La Mancha as well as many Off-Broadway, National Tours and regional theatre productions. Paolo Montalban joins the cast as Clopin. He was last seen at the Ogunquit Playhouse in The King and I (Lun Tha) and Cinderella (Prince Christopher). Shaun Kerrison returns from England to direct this epic production for the Ogunquit Playhouse. He has directed many Ogunquit productions, receiving many IRNE and BroadwayWorld nominations for Best Director. Mr. Kerrison was last in Ogunquit in 2014 to direct Mary Poppins the Broadway Musical and The Witches of Eastwick and in 2012 he directed the Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic South Pacific. He also directed the U.S. regional premiere of Sunset Boulevard at the Ogunquit Playhouse starring Stephanie Powers, as well as Les Miserables and My Fair Lady for the Ogunquit stage. On Broadway, Mr. Kerrison was the Resident Director of Mary Poppins and was the Associate Director for the Broadway revival of Les Miserables and he redirected the National Theatres production of My Fair Lady for its 50th Anniversary U.S. National Tour. He recently reunited with conductor John Wilson to direct Kiss Me Kate for the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall.
Choreographer for the Ogunquit production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame is Connor Gallagher who recently received an Astaire Award for his work on The Robber Bridegroom at the Roundabout Theatre in New York City. His many show credits include the world-premiere stage adaptation of Disney’s Tangled with director Gordon Greenberg; Robert Schenkkan and Neil Berg's The Twelve at Denver Center; The Fabulous Lipitones for Goodspeed; and Perez Hilton at Lincoln Center. Mr. Gallagher will next choreograph the Broadway-bound musical FOUND for the Philadelphia Theatre Company and as a director, a new musical with Disney Creative Entertainment for fall of 2017.
Fight Director Jacob Grigolia-Rosenbaum joins the creative team to direct the fight scenes in the show. He has worked on many Broadway productions including Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, Peter and the Starcatcher, Cyrano de Bergerac, and On the Twentieth Century as well as many Off-Broadway and regional theatre productions and the television production of Peter Pan Live for NBC/Universal.
Brent-Alan Huffman returns to Ogunquit Playhouse as Conductor/Music Director after having conducted last year’s Playhouse hit Sister Act. Mr. Huffman conducted the recent Billboard number 1 cast recording of Hunchback of Notre Dame, and was Conductor/Music Director for the original U.S. companies in 2014-15. His Broadway credits include Leap of Faith, Disney’s The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, and National Tours include Sister Act, Little Shop of Horrors and Beauty and the Beast. For television he served as Production Music Coordinator on ABC’s The Music Man starring Matthew Broderick and Kristin Chenoweth, and as Associate Music Producer on NBC/Hallmark’s A Christmas Carol starring Kelsey Grammer. Assisting Mr. Huffman is Associate Music Director Jeffrey Campos and Chorus Master Wendell Scott Purrington.
An all new set has been designed by Adam Koch exclusively for the Ogunquit stage that reaches out over the audience complete with areas for Quasimodo to venture. Mr. Koch previously designed sets for the Ogunquit Playhouse productions of Sister Act and Saturday Night Fever. He has designed sets for theatres across the nation, including the landmark outdoor production of Carousel and The Sleepy Hollow Experience for Serenbe Playhouse; the original Chicago production of Million Dollar Quartet at the Apollo Theatre; Hello, Dolly! for Ford’s Theater; Miss Saigon, Dreamgirls, Kiss of the Spiderwoman (2008 Helen Hayes nomination), and See What I Wanna See for Signature Theatre; and Bat Boy for 1st Stage for which he received a 2015 Helen Hayes nomination. His Off-Broadway credits include Rooms: A Rock Romance, Loaded, We the People, Pinkalicious and Freckleface Strawberry. Associate Scenic Designer Steven Royal, who has collaborated with Adam Koch on over thirty musicals, plays and live events including Miss Saigon (Signature Theatre), Carousel (Serenbe Playhouse) and Hairspray (Syracuse Stage) also joins the creative team for the Ogunquit Playhouse.
Also joining the creative team for Ogunquit Playhouse is Costume Designer Martha Bromelmeier who designed costumes for hundreds of theatrical productions including The Kennedy Center Honors, The New Victory Theatre, The Cocteau Rep, The Lucille Lortel Theatre, and Primary Stages among many others. Martha has worked with leading ladies including Patti LuPone, Glenn Close, Audra McDonald, Sutton Foster, Kelli O’Hara, Jessie Mueller, Laura Benanti, Laura Osnes, Patina Miller and Anna Kendrick.
